GPS devices help families keep track of their loved ones.

Posted on 12th Mar 2010 @ 12:18 PM

For years, worried families and carers have been frustrated by the inability to provide added protection to their vulnerable family members. There are several devices for home monitoring, but few are available which offer the necessary protection and security for those wishing to remain active outside the home.

Keeping track of their movements, especially important the case of dementia, as well as having the ability to quickly raise an alarm are just some of the features offered by Pin Point.

Pin Point specialise in providing personal GPS tracking and security devices. Their products are selected for ease of use with maximum functionality and each device is delivered, pre-programmed to your individual requirements.

The GPS pendant is a small and light weight device that can be easily worn as a pendant around the neck, attached to keys or placed in a back pack. It is GPS enabled and can also be used to engage in two way audio communication, at the touch of a button, just like a mobile phone.

“I truly believe that this product will give the most vulnerable in our society a greater ability to move around outside their home, safe in the knowledge that should they become lost or disorientated, they can quickly raise an alarm to those most concerned about their wellbeing.”

Alternatively, the GPS wrist watch looks much like any ordinary digital wristwatch, but it houses a GPS chip similar to that contained inside a satnav unit. This can also be used to send and receive SMS messages as well as providing a visual GPS Compass and accurate GPS Co-ordinates, ideal for hill walking and hiking.

"As far as the wearer is concerned it's a digital watch - for the family, they can rest assured that they can be quickly and accurately locate them if they become concerned" said Andrew Fraser, Pin points Director. He added, “The great thing about both devices is they require little input from the wearer, as long as the device is switched on, charged and able to receive a signal, they can be located.”

A variety of subscription services, from just 60p per day, give you additional control. This service allows you to access a tracking application which gives live updates on the wearer’s position. You will also be able to set up restricted zones, known as Geo Fence. If this boundary is broken, you will be alerted visually on the screen, as well as via email and text.

If a computer is unavailable, relatives can request text messages about the wearer’s location direct from the device, pinpointing the street address.

Mr Fraser added "There are over 700,000 dementia suffers in the UK and research suggests that up to a third of them will wonder and become disorientated at some point. I truly hope that what Pin Point is offering will give these people a greater sense of freedom and allow them to continue to engage in their normal activity” he continued “this can only be a benefit to us all, as keeping people living in their own homes for as long as possible will relieve the pressure on government finances at a time when cutbacks are a constant”
